STRIPPING BOLERO

Performance

“Stripping Bolero is (…) sensuality, sexiness, poetry, but also an ironic play with cliché.”

Falk Schreiber, TANZ-Zeitschrift, Januar 2026

An evening full of highlights: Maurice Ravel's ‘Boléro’ as a multi-sensory, humorous and exuberant performance between sign language poetry, choreography and audio description.

Maurice Ravel’s world famous “Boléro” is a musical composition that builds and builds as a permanent crescendo and ends in pure ecstasy. This orchestral classic that draws audiences in prompted choreographic duo Rykena/Jüngst from Hamburg and Munich to develop sensuous and choreographic highpoints for their new work, and simultaneously interrogate it: the performers on stage, Emil Leske, Raymond Liew Jin Pin und Lisa Rykena, play with escalation, deceleration and seduction. The climax is broken up and rearranged using set pieces from famous plays, dance history, or the art of striptease. Dance, sign language and sign language poetry, audio description, and erotic storytelling create a world on stage that lies between great tragedy and tender intimacy. The multi-sensory performance uses delay and eroticism to create an aesthetic of ingress and invitation: the theatre space becomes more intense, tension is maintained and then released, climaxes shift, bodies fall to the floor or tell stories backwards. A style-defining work in hypnotic proximity to the audience. And because the climax is at the heart of classical theatre, “STRIPPING BOLERO” ends – a little teasing should be allowed - with its own surprising climax.
