Nature Theater of Oklahoma is an award-winning New York art and performance enterprise under the direction of Pavol Liska and Kelly Copper. With each new project, we attempt to set an impossible challenge for ourselves, the audience, and our collaborators — working from inside the codes and confines of established genres and exploding them. No two projects are formally the same, but the work is always full of humor, earnestness, rigor, and the audience plays an essential role – whether as spectators or – just as often – as participants in the work. Using readymade material, found space, gifted properties, cosmic accident, extreme formal manipulation and plain hard work — Nature Theater of Oklahoma makes art to affect a shift in the perception of everyday reality that extends beyond the site of performance and into the world in which we live.

Projects: Die Kinder der Toten, a film project based on Elfriede Jelinek's 666 page novel, created in rural Styria with local amateur actors. Life and Times - Episodes 1-9, a multi-year, multi-disciplinary epic project using verbatim text from a series of telephone calls.

Significant awards: Nestroy Award - Special Prize (2018) for Die Kinder der Toten; International Federation of Film Critics Award for Best Film (Forum Section) for Die Kinder der Toten in the 2019 Berlin Film Festival; Berlin Theatreteffen 2010 Official Selection for Life and Times - Episode 1; OBIE awards for No Dice (2008) and Life and Times 1-4 (2013). 

Venue information

Spatial Access

The event will take place at the FFT Düsseldorf.

The FFT is located on the first floor of KAP1. You can reach the first floor directly by lift. The floor number is indicated in Braille and on tactile buttons. The lift only stops on the first floor during regular opening hours (from one hour before each event).

The doors at the FFT are not self-opening and some are very heavy. If you need assistance navigating the building, please feel free to speak to us on site or contact us in advance.

Once you are on the first floor, the foyer and event rooms are accessible at ground level. In Stage 1, there is a gallery that can only be reached via a staircase from the foyer.

The toilets are accessible at ground level; a wheelchair-accessible toilet is also available and is located between the other toilet cubicles.

Distances

Paid car park approx. 170 metres away (UFA Palast).

Distance to “Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof” approx. 150 metres. Depending on the mode of transport and platform, the station has lifts and escalators.

Audience situation

Seated public gallery with free seating. A limited number of wheelchair and beanbag seats are available. We offer early boarding.

Please let us know your requirements when purchasing tickets. We can then take this into account on the day.

Information for Blind and Visually Impaired People

Guidance System

At the FFT Düsseldorf, in KAP 1, there is a wayfinding system from the building entrance and for using the lift. The wayfinding system does not continue inside the theatre spaces (box office, foyer, stages).

Please feel free to contact us in advance to arrange a pick-up service or on-site assistance.

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome at the festival. Due to the variety of festival venues and event formats, we ask that you contact us in advance to make brief arrangements.

Information for Deaf People and People with Hearing Impairments

The play is performed almost entirely in sung English, with subtitles in English and German.

Induction Loop Amplification for Visitors with Hearing aids

The stages at the FFT Düsseldorf are equipped with an induction loop system, which is used as standard for all productions. In the raised tiers, the signal reaches as far as row 3, so please choose your seat accordingly (unfortunately, the induction loop system cannot be used in the main auditorium).

Please do let us know if you require a seat with this facility when purchasing your ticket.

To use the induction loop system, the hearing aid must be switched to T or M/T. Further information on how this works in detail can be obtained from hearing aid specialists, as these settings vary depending on the specific device. The T-coil must be activated.

Once the hearing aid is set to ‘induction loop’ (i.e. T or M/T), it will pick up the magnetic field and the audio signal will be transmitted to the hearing aid wearer.

Physical Introductions

One hour before the performance begins, audience members are invited to a 30-minute introduction that prepares them physically and sensually for the evening. Developed in cooperation with students of the Master’s programme in Dance Education at the Centre for Contemporary Dance (Cologne University of Music and Dance), it welcomes participants of all ages, with or without movement experience.
