Performance
“(…) the trio [demonstrate], that Netti Nüganen has a wonderfully enigmatic, linguistically-poetic streak (…).”

Between music, live performance and trip: melting, muddy ice worlds become a transient monument against control and conquest.
Austro-Estonian performance artist and musician Netti Nüganen, who for many years toured with Florentina Holzinger, tells stories of bleak ecologies in her work, constructing them in large battles of materials on stage, then dismantling them into their individual parts. She interrogates how we talk about and with them and what we can imagine beyond them. In “Ash, horizon, riding a house,” Nüganen and her two collaborators experience the constant fluidity of identity and belonging shaped by the weather and environment. How can we possibly belong anywhere at all in a fragile and unstable environment like ours? In response to a world in which land, language and folklore have long since become commodities, Nüganen, Sova and Kisling surround themselves with ice. In this constantly dripping landscape of screens of ice, the audience is invited to attend to objects made of ice. In an uncompromising performance, Nüganen becomes the narrator, leading us through nightmarish episodes, embodying different perspectives of the local area by transforming herself into characters such as a real estate agent, an auctioneer and a tourist. Against a backdrop of melting scenery, any expectation of permanence is completely abandoned. After the ice comes water, and melting becomes an act of resistance: against control and the desire for conquest.
